This is a small book that contains sideview maps, overhead maps, pictures, and descriptions of some of the more popular caves of Central Oregon. It is definitely recommended for the beginner.

Surprisingly, my favorite section of this book is the information on the Redmond Caves and Lions Cave. All the other cave books I have been able to get my hands on, forget to mention or include any information on these particular caves.

DAWN'S EARLY LIGHT is a rare ethnic romance between an Asianhero and Caucasian heroine. For this I applaud Mrs. Larsen and ThomasNelson Publishers. The story is a unique romance showing how love can prevail over prejudice and bigotry. It is nice to see someone writing the stories I would like to read as well as giving me the hope of a market for my personal Japanese romances. Thank you, Mrs. Larson, I enjoyed reading your novel.

This is a lovely story about good people in a horrible situation. Jean is very real, she grows slowly into a kind, mature woman. Tom is incredible. The book has a very deep message about prejudice and responsibility for your own actions.

I enjoyed this book very much. I found it by accident at an outlet mall on a discount counter. The book was so good I came on line as soon as I finished it to find the next one in the series. I can't wait to find out why life has in store for Tom and Jean! I hope the next book will be available soon.

This is the first book of the series that I read and it hooked me and spurred me on to read the rest of them. Although the author, J.A. Jance is a woman, she writes very convincingly about a male character, J. P. Beaumont. We see the struggle between his personal and his professional life as he is summoned to a Shakespeare Festival where his daughter is pregnant and soon to be married. After his arrival, two actors are murdered and Beaumont uses his professional skills as a policeman to solve the murder while trying to be civil to his prospective son-in-law and his daughter's artsy friends. Beaumont has a wry way of looking at his own foibles which endears him to readers. If you enjoy this book, there are several more in the series.

This was the first Jance book I encountered. I decided to read it because it takes place in the town I live and work in. As much as I enjoyed reading about the places and cities I know well what I really enjoyed was the character of JP Beaumont. He is an ordinary man (a Seattle Cop wih an extraordinarily inherited fortune) who is caught between his work and his family. The characters seem very real and Jance's writing gives them a life and humanity that appeals strongly and makes you really care about them. The story never lets up either and you will find yourself hard pressed to put the book down. I have read every book Jance has written now and she is always on the top of my list of series that I am waiting for the next installment of!

All the information you'd ever want to fish on the Deschutes River. If you plan on spending any amount of time on this great Oregon River, you NEED to buy this book.

By reading this book you will learn more about angling than by actually fishing. I was a self styled "expert" and taught many people how to flyfish on the Deschutes. This book is unique in that the true expert (the author) is not condescending,omits the egotistical ranting found in other "how to" books and does a great job of explaining things without mystifying the process. Before I take anyone fishing (spin, bait or fly) they now read portions of this book prior to the trip. Now my trips to the Deschutes with novices are much more fun, more relaxed and modest in the style of Mr. Richmond. When does the year 2000 edition arrive?

This is the first Tom Bethany Mystery that I read and I enjoyed it very much. The characters and plots were really interesting. I would love to read more of Tom Bethany.

Why do I like Doolittle's work so much? Perhaps it's the way he grabs you right from the beginning. We are jolted into the story with this opening: "Like any other university, Harvard sucks. What makes it a great university is that it sucks harder than most." Tom is drawn into the eco "save the tree" issue when an important peaceful leader is being threatened. Perhaps I enjoy his books due to wishing this modern day Robin Hood existed. Perhaps it's because all books in his series can stand alone. Perhaps it's the way many important issues are brought out to the foreground to be thought about and explored. Or most importantly, perhaps it's the way in which Doolittle weaves words with wit, wisdom, adventure with a touch of reality thrown in to boot.

Luoma takes the reader on an intimate, guided tour with some of the tenacious pioneers of forested ecosystems research and the mysterious processes whereby the woods become established, grow and change--in the case of the moist coastal uplands of western Oregon, processes that take centuries to complete all their steps. For those who like their science in the field, in the raw, and introduced by the human practitioners struggling (and loving) the dance of theory and experiment, this is a must-have. Ancient Forests rhetoric too frequently airbrushes over the hard scientific inquiry that helped reveal both the uniqueness of the Oregon forested ecosystems research site and yet suggests that some of these hidden processes, or ones similar, will be found to play crucial roles in other forest places as well. If Luoma doesn't beat me to it, I could do worse than spend the rest of my career writing a series for all the Long-Term Ecological Research stations that perform the valuable work of building baselines and foundations in ecology for every major ecological region. At least, this is the sort of book that makes a reader feel that way!

Luoma knows how to take important scientific work in forest ecology, and turn it into a book that is a pleasure to read. If learning had been this much fun in school, think how well educated we would all be today! Seriously, I like to read well-written books, but I prefer them to be to tell me things I din't know. Hidden forests does. Another really good read out this season is Bullough's Pond, a treatment of ecological history and industrial revolution that I found fascinating, and it read like a novel.

I'm Sorry Almira Ann is a wonderful book about a young girl named Sarah . Sarah and her family are traveling on the Oregon Trail from Missouri on a covered wagon with a group of other covered wagons . Sarah's best freind,Almira Ann , is also traveling with the group and with her family . But if only Sarah's , hasty spirit would just leave the trip would be alot easier for everyone. But Sarah can't quite keep the hasty spirit from causing her to disobey the rules . Along the way Sarah accidentally causes Almira Ann to fall from her wagon , and when she does she breaks her leg . Sarah knows she needs to control her hasty spirit . If you enjoy historical fiction you should enjoy this book.

Jane Kurtz's newest book truly fulfills the need for accurate historical fiction for the middle grade reader. The story of Sarah and Almira Ann, two best friends, as they travel the Oregon Trail with their families moves quickly and should draw in even the most reluctant reader. Sarah rapidly moves from one adventure to another, some with unfortunate consequences. When Almira Ann is injured as a result of Sarah's actions, it is easy to identify with Sarah as she struggles to deal with her feelings. Susan Havice's soft pencil illustrations and colorful cover add to the warmth of the book. This is a great transition book for student s who are moving from easy chapter books to novels. Also, as an elementary school librarian, I am so pleased to be able to offer this little gem of a book to students who must choose a book "over 100 pages" for their next book report.

Smyth has delivered a straightforward account of a forest economy's ascension and decline, plus that forest's natural history and management evolution from old-growth to tree farm to conservation area. Any outdoor person can relate to Smyth's recollections of unromantic hard work in the woods while still invoking the inherent romance of forestry among trees big and small. The book is a business history as well, recounting events regional and in the world at large that reached into southwest Oregon to alter best-laid plans.

I'm a rather reluctant history-book reader, but I found this book thoroughly compelling! My husband and I read the stories out loud on our trip through Oregon and watched the past come alive. If you are tired of the same, old dusty Western tales, give this one a try. It's sure to enchant you! And thanks to the author for putting these stories together.
